COMMERCIAL SPEECH IN A SOCIAL SPACE

Published in Social Media and the Law (ed. Daxton Stewart), this chapter discusses the legislative and regulatory developments relevant to social media law that are essential to advertising and public relations professionals.

CHANGING PERSPECTIVE: BALANCING DRONE JOURNALISM RIGHTS AND RIGHTS TO PRIVACY

May 2015

This article, co-authored with Dr. Kearston Wesner at Quinnipiac University, was presented to the International Communications Association. The article delineates changes in privacy law relative to new technologies. The authors conclude that the courts' approach fails to protect an individual's right to privacy in the face of ubiquitous surveillance from private technology, such as drones.

WHEN THE NEED TO KNOW OUTWEIGHS PRIVACY: GRANTING ACCESS TO CHILD WELFARE RECORDS IN THE 50 STATES

2014

This article, published in the Children's Legal Rights Journal, analyzes the level of access granted by federal and state law to child welfare records. These records contain private information about children and families. However, these records can also be vital pieces of evidence in evaluating government action. This article, in explicating extant law, suggests that a balance of access and privacy is required to provide adequate oversight.

TEACHING

As a professor of mass communications, I have taught courses in communications and society, public relations, social media, and communications law. My teaching philosophy focuses on student engagement and empowerment, using a mix of classroom activities, discussion and traditional lecture.

COURTNEY BARCLAY

For many, the professors they encounter in college and post-grad become significantly influential figures for the rest of their lives. For me, these mentors helped me find a passion for teaching and encouraged me to pursue a career in higher education.

Since earning a Ph.D./J.D. joint degree from the University of Florida, I have been fortunate to work with hundreds of gifted students at the University of Florida, The Newhouse School at Syracuse University, and Jacksonville University. At JU, I teach communication classes, focusing on advertising, public relations, and communications law. I look forward to every day in the classroom as a new opportunity to share and learn.

When I'm not teaching or scouring Westlaw, you can find me on the golf course with my husband or cuddling with our adorable dogs!
